Biography - Jeffrey Dorman

"The energy of nature flows through my pastels" says Jeffrey Dorman. "Nature is my inspiration and collectors share my sense of wonder. Painting with a chunk of pigment (pastel) held in the hand is the same process ancient artists used to create the cave paintings, some of mankind's earliest known art. Each stroke has energy, primal and intimate, created with the touch of my skin. Like the cave painters, I try to connect with the spirit of the natural world," said the artist.

Dorman studied painting at The Maryland Institute College of Art, receiving a Bachelors of Fine Art degree. Working as an artist in downtown NYC for over 20 years, he also art directed projects for magazines like GQ (US); Per Lui (Italy); and Tique (Denmark). MTV commissioned a short film titled ARTificial Jungle for which he designed an environment of abstract plant forms colored with pastels. Fascinated by the vibrant color and immediacy of pastels, in the mid-eighties Dorman began creating portraits of flowers using pastels on paper. In 1990 he began his rural landscapes. "The unspoiled natural landscapes of upstate New York and Pennsylvania are my Provence,"says the artist. "My reverence and rapturous feelings, are conveyed in my art."

Painting directly from nature in the plein air tradition of the impressionists, Dorman creates intensely beautiful works that are a pleasure to live with. "My art leads the heart to a calm oasis a visual path to the soul's natural habitat, a healing place of awe and wonder."

His work is included in private collections across the U.S. and Europe.
